Learning With a Difference
DanceKids was built on the idea of using dance, music and theatre to assist teachers in enhancing their students’ learning experiences. Our Discovery Programs focus on exploring basic scientific concepts, the natural world and cultural values, with the hope that we will kindle an interest in the hearts and minds of the children we interact with. At the end of our Discovery Programs we offer suggestions of ways to continue the content covered into other learning areas.
Of the three learning styles – Auditory, Visual and Kinaesthetic, the latter is without a doubt the most difficult to present in the classroom. A packed curriculum leaves limited time for students to engage in this kind of learning. We aim to assist teachers in presenting information through Kinaesthetic learning styles.
Our Discovery Programs are based on studies that show a direct link between physical activity and cognitive (brain) development and enhanced learning. To that end, children are given opportunities to dance and act throughout the five week blocks that our programs take place.
There is no Right or Wrong
“What all children have in common is that they will take a chance. They’re not frightened of being wrong. I don’t mean to say that being wrong is the same thing as being creative. But if you’re not prepared to be wrong, you’ll never come up with anything original. By the time they get to be adults, most kids have lost that capacity. They have become frightened of being wrong.”
This quote from Sir Ken Robinson, illustrates the underlying philosophy we take in the classroom. We encourage the participants in our programs to challenge themselves and the ideas that they take for granted. It is our goal to emphasise learning through creative problem solving, where being right is not about having the correct answer, but instead about having a different answer.
This idea is already in the process of being adopted in the corporate world. Where increasingly rapid change has forced companies to constantly adapt to new situations. In the modern world, not being able to problem solve creatively places you at a distinct disadvantage.
